Designing for Cross Media Compatibility with CSS

The image to the left shows how this site appears on the Sony P900 PDA. The same XHTML forms the structure of this site whether you are viewing it on your desk-top machine, your PDA, your smart phone or whether you have selected to print the material for reading at your leisure.

Through the use of CSS it is possible to present different content to different media types. One such example of this is the ability to switch logos, the logo on the screen version of this site is different from the PDA version and if you opt to print preview this page you will see the logo is different again.

Throughout these changes the XHTML structure of the site never changes, it is simply manipulated by the CSS files that it interacts with. Their is no need to run multiple versions of your website, by using these techniques you can reduce the maintenance time you spend on your website, reach an ever growing mobile audience and provide structured documents for those who would like to print your website for future reference.

Accessibility Within Portability

Sites that are portable require that special attention is given to accessibility. The physics in using a site on a handheld device is slightly different to that used when interacting with a website with your mouse or keyboard.

The accessibility features required to make navigating a handheld deivce easy and straight-forward are taken from a screen websites keyboard accessibility features. In the course you will learn how to deploy these accessibility features and correctly implement them to allow ease of navigation for your handheld users.
